What lies behind the occupational field of automation technology?
Automation technology is a branch of industrial production in which goods and merchandise are produced using machines. The origins of automation technology date back to the end of the 18th century. At that time, entrepreneurs began to replace manual labor with machines in order to increase production efficiency. The first wave of automation - known as the first industrial revolution - essentially focused on mechanical systems that automated work processes using steam power or water energy, for example.
The next wave of automation - also known as the second industrial revolution (around 1870) - involved the use of electrical energy and assembly line work as drivers of increased production. The third industrial revolution took place around another 100 years later. Around 1970, computer technology was used for the first time to partially automate certain production steps in industrial production, using only programmable logic controllers and computers. Since the introduction of these technologies, manufacturers have been able to carry out a complete work process automatically - i.e. without human intervention. Well-known examples of this are robots that carry out programmed processes without the need for human intervention.
What is the status quo today?
Today, the economy is in the midst of realizing the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 . It is based on the extreme advances in information technology and robotics, which are revolutionizing automation technology once again. In contrast to the previous era, the networking of intelligent systems in particular plays a decisive role. Today, complex systems are being developed that are based on sensors, actuators, artificial intelligence and big data analysis, whereas in the past only sub-processes were automated. In Industry 4.0, robots and autonomous machines are increasingly taking over monotonous, high-precision or dangerous/unhealthy tasks.
Modern automation technology is therefore seen as a sub-area of electrical engineering and is carried out by highly qualified specialists - so-called "automation technicians".
What do automation technicians (m/f/d) actually do?
Automation engineers (m/f/d) deal with the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of automated systems and processes in various industries. They design and program computer-controlled systems such as robots, industrial control systems, process control systems and other automated machines. They work closely with engineers (m/f/d), technicians (m/f/d) and specialists from other disciplines to develop efficient and reliable automation solutions. The aim is to increase productivity and quality, reduce costs and improve safety.
What tasks are there in automation technology?
System design and integration
Designing and developing intelligent control systems. This includes completely new developments as well as the integration of such systems into existing production facilities.
Commissioning and maintenance
Commissioning of systems and their ongoing monitoring and maintenance as well as optimization of processes to ensure and improve system performance.
Programming
Programming of PLCs (programmable logic controllers), robots and other automated systems. Programming languages such as C, Java or specific languages used for PLCs play an important role here.
Research and development
Research into new technologies and methods to further advance automation. An important core area of modern research is the topic of artificial intelligence and the development of self-learning systems.
In which industries and application areas is automation technology relevant?

What jobs are there in automation technology?
There are various professions and job titles in automation technology, which generally reflect a specific focus. Examples are
- Automation technician (m/f/d)
- PLC programmer (m/f/d)
- Robotics engineer (m/f/d)
- Maintenance and service technician (m/f/d)

What training is required?
The requirements for training and further education vary depending on the career path and desired position. Vocational training in electronics, mechatronics, IT or similar disciplines can be an advantage when starting out in automation technology. Specialists who choose this training path often focus on operational tasks in the construction, commissioning and maintenance of automated systems.
A university degree is the best prerequisite for a career in managerial positions and with a stronger focus on redesigning. Examples of degree courses that offer an ideal basis are automation technology, electrical engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering with a focus on automation technology, computer science/software engineering, control engineering or industrial automation. Depending on the specific field of activity, additional qualifications such as certifications in programming PLC systems or robotics can also be an advantage.
